ETHICS & WELFARE OFFICERS

Mrs Avril Spriggs was appointed Regional Welfare Officer for the East Region in 2005.  As Chair of British Gymnastics Ethics and Welfare Committee, Avril spriggs is involved in many areas but most specifically in Child Protection, Health, Safety and Welfare. This is a huge remit and Government legislation is continually adding to the work of this Committee.

Karly Good qualified as a second Regional Welfare Officer in December 2009 and we are fortunate to have a County Welfare Officer to assist the club welfare officers in each of the six counties.

Regular Newsletters are sent to each club and posted to the web site for download.

It is expected that a Welfare Officer will be in attendance at all Regional Competitions. Glynis Tovey and Denise Woolf are qualified as Event Welfare Officers.   

 The region recognizes the importance of all people who work with children needing to attend a mandatory child protection courses, to this end the region offer a financial subsidy to affiliated clubs and their members.

From the 1st April 2010 it became a requirement that anyone working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults in a regulated activity (Coaches, Volunteers, Club Welfare Officers etc.) completes Safeguarding training as recognised by British Gymnastics. Club Welfare Officers are also required to update their BG Time to Listen training. It is also a requirement for this training to be updated every 3 years to ensure it is consistent with the changes in law and legislation.  Those in a regulated activity working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults who have not already completed any safeguarding training must attend the Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children Level 1 training or a course recognised by British Gymnastics as soon as possible (please see below for recognised courses).  

The British Gymnastics Child Protection Awareness and Implementation award is no longer recognised, as it is significantly out of date.  

With effect from 1st April 2010 the delivery of Safeguarding and Protecting Children Courses is being handled through SportsCoach UK.  

Please see the tables below to indicate when training for Children Protection Awareness and Time to Listen that has already been achieved should be updated and by when.
