THE DISCIPLINES

Gymnastics is a sport involving the performance of sequences of movements requiring physical strength, flexibility and kinesthetic awareness. 

It developed from fitness and beauty practices used by the ancient Greeks.

Modern gymnastics is regulated by the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique incorporates the following disciplines:

ACROBATIC GYMNASTICS

Acrobatic gymnasts need to show body control in various positions, both on the ground and in the air. 

Competed as Men's pairs, Women's pairs, Mixed pairs, Women's groups (3) or Men's groups (4).  Pairs are made up of a base and a top.  Women's groups comprise of a base, middle and top, Men's groups consist of one base, two middles and one top.  Bases are generally older athletes that display strength and balance.  Tops are usually younger athletes displaying flexibility and agility.  Middles are often required to show a combination of all attributes

 

Aerobic Gymnastics

AEROBIC GYMNASTICS

Competed by both men and women this involves the performance of high impact floor routines emphasizing strength, flexibility and aerobic fitness. 

General Gymnastics
This discipline caters for various levels of competitive and non competitive gymnastics.  Under the umbrella of general is Team Gym which involves a group of gymnasts performing a floor exercise to music, vault using a trampette and tumbling.

MEN'S ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS

Floor - A routine performed without music on a sprung carpet floor 12metres x 12 metres and should show a series of tumbling skills with flexibility, strength and balance

Pommel horse -  Gymnasts perform circular movements around the horse with their legs allowing only the hands to travel the length of the horse

Rings - About eight foot from the ground men must have good strength and flexibility to swing themselves on these rings and stop to show a perfect balance position

Vault - With an 80 feet runway the men spring to jump onto a springboard hands reaching toward the top of a vault table (130cms high) to perform a salto/s before landing

Parallel Bars - Wooden bars shoulder width apart men perform a series of swings and balances requiring great strength and coordination

High Bar - A 1 inch steel bar the gymnast must hold onto whilst showing swinging skills in various shapes, release skills, twist and change of direction before landing

RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS
This discipline is performed manly by women and involves performances of five separate routines with use of apparatus
ball, ribbon, hoop, clubs and rope on a carpet floor area

TRAMPOLINE GYMNASTICS

This discipline consists of four events, individual, synchronized, double mini and trampoline.  Individual routines use a build up of jumps to achieve a height followed by a sequence of aerial tumbling skills.  Synchronized is similar except that both competitors must perform the routine together.  Double mini trampoline involves a smaller trampoline with a run up, two moves are performed and scored

WOMEN'S ARTISTIC

Vault - With a 25 metre runway the gymnast sprints to jump onto the springboard before hands touch the vaulting table to perform straight/pike/tuck or twisting saltos 

Asymmetric Bars - The gymnast will perform a fluid exercise showing swings, handstands, circles and release elements before dismounting

Balance Beam - 16 feet long and 4inces wide the gymnast will perform a choreographed routine comprising leaps, spins, jumps and acrobatic skills  

Floor - Performed on a sprung carpet floor 12 metres x 12 metres and with instrumental music now longer than 90 seconds the gymnast must show a series of tumbles, dance passage, spins and movement complementary to the music
